convention was clearly some rare form of torture, and only

worsened by having a boss who spent half the time shrieking

hamsterly abuse at you, and the rest off doing some

mysterious errands. Scoblow was clearly suffering from

sexual frustration, and had insisted on destroying Makhno‘s

fantasies by going on endlessly about Benny and her

husband. Her husband, for Goddess‘ sake. Reconciled and

everything. He had seen them wandering around The Hotel

together, and although they didn‘t seem too reconciled,

Scoblow had insisted.

In need of intoxication whatever the cost, Makhno had

agreed to meet up with Seez and Soaz for a drink. He had

found them earlier in the bar, hellbent on oblivion. It was an

attitude he could appreciate. But, on his way to the hotel bar,

he saw something in the lobby that stopped him in his

tracks.

It was Jason Kane, storming across the lobby in a

manner which suggested an extremely, extremely bad mood.

By looking at him, Makhno suspected that the Kane-

Summerfield reconciliation was not going as well as he had

earlier feared. Jason had approached the reception desk, and

was making some kind of complaint in a psychotically irate

tone of voice.

Without letting himself think about it, Makhno changed

course, moving away from the bar and towards the elevators.

He walked straight into a waiting lift and hit the button for

Benny‘s floor.

Kane was a moron, Makhno thought as the lift ascended.

He would have to be, to screw things up with Professor

Summerfield like that. He wasn‘t good enough for her,

with his scruffy dress sense, paint-stained head and receding

hairline. Right now he was down in the lobby, being an

obnoxious little tit, doubtless over some complete triviality.

He just wasn‘t worthy of her.

Makhno had lain alone the previous night with just his

copy of Down Among The Dead Men for company, beneath

his promotional poster for the original hardback publication.

He‘d thought then of the ways he might pleasure Benny. He

knew how, and he‘d read somewhere that they would both be

at the height of their sexual powers.

As soon as the lift stopped Makhno was out of the door,

heading towards Benny‘s room. He pulled himself to a halt

outside her door, and raised a fist to knock.

And stopped. His hand hovered in mid-air, then lowered

itself. He had seen Jason and Benny together earlier in the

day. Although they had seemed to be bickering at each other,

there had been a tangible link between the two. Something in

their body language, the way they always walked a precise

distance apart, belied their surface hostility and was

indicative of some deeper connection. In some strange way,

which they were probably unaware of themselves, they

obviously belonged together.

They clearly had enough problems sorting out their

tempestuous relationship without Makhno diving in and

complicating matters. The arrival of a new young buck on the

scene would certainly make Jason Kane jealous. It might

prevent Benny from finding happiness. His footsteps

deadened by the soft carpet, Makhno silently, regretfully,

returned to the lift. He felt a watery sensation in his eyes, but

whether that was due to emotion or exhaustion he wasn‘t

sure. He closed his aching eyes as the lift began its return

trip to the lobby.

Benny lay on her bed, staring at the ceiling.
